Japan is working on its F-X fighter program, but Monday's announcement prevented plans from being fully integrated. Instead, Japan will join Britain and Italy for a "joint concept analysis" to "understand areas of mutual interest and explore possible options for future combat aviation cooperation."
The British government has increased defense spending since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, but having a new full partner in the Tempest program could help develop a new fighter by sharing the heavy cost of aircraft development. Some analysts estimate the cost to be as high as £25 billion.
UK Defense Secretary Ben Wallace said: "Cooperation with Japan and Italy on these advanced technologies demonstrates the benefits of our alliance around the world."
Speaking at the exhibition, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said, "The combat aircraft system of the future will not be just an aircraft. It is a complete platform for technological change and industrial derivation of all kinds."
